You can get a speed boost by driving over the glowing boost pads on the track, or by collecting enough coins to fill your boost meter.
What happens if I hit a cone or puddle?
Hitting a hazard will slow your kart down. Cones slow you down for 0.65 seconds, and puddles slow you down for 1.05 seconds.
